Lake Balaton is a wonderful place to sail small yachts. During
the Summer months, the warm weather and gentle breezes are ideal for
gentle sails to ports along the 200 km coastline of Lake Balaton.
When the wind pipes up, then it's a completely different story and
the flashing lights along the lakeside warn sailors that only
experienced sailors with fin keeled boats should stay on the
water. Those who dare stay on the water get the thrills and
spills of a Balaton gale ... short choppy waves, the yacht heeled
right over with spray everywhere.
In order to preserve the cleanliness of the water,
the only motor boats allowed on the lake are ferries, the water
authorities and the police. Yachts may use their engines only
to get in and out of marinas.
